Euskodok (Association for the Preservation of Basque Documentary and Bibliographic Heritage) was established in 2004 in Bilbao, with Angel Gaintza as the main driving force behind the association. At that point, Gaintza had already spent over twenty years doing voluntary work for the documentation collection of Benedictine monk Juan Jose Aguirre, and the creation of the association led to the regularisation of his situation. Today Gaintza is in charge of the association.
The main objective of the association is collecting all kinds of documentation: books, periodicals, posters, stickers, pamphlets, calendars, etc., all of which were either published in or related to the Basque Country. Some of the many tasks that Euskodok engages in include locating and collecting material throughout the Basque Country, developing and managing a volunteer network for collecting and delivering material to the Lazkaoko Beneditarren Fundazioa and other libraries, archives and documentation centres, and collaborating in the management of an exchange programme between the different institutions. Of the documentation it collects, Euskodok attaches particular importance to ephemeral material related to propaganda, for example, as well as rare material.
All of the collaboration carried out between Euskodok and Juan Jose Aguirre over the years has surely saved a large part of Basque documentary heritage.
